Today's story involves a conversation between Kenaz the Cook, a character inspired by the rune of Fire, and Fundis, dwarven daughter of King Nordri of Nidhavelir.

Kenaz admired the feast which was laid out before them. For a land without sun and with few animals, the dwarves laid out quite a spread. Root vegetables and burrowing animals were the majority, all covered in spices. #futharkvillage @CeruliasCircle @wing_paranormal

“This is a lovely spread,” Kenaz said to Fundis. “Thank you for providing your guests such appetizing fare.”

“We eat like this every night. It was simply a matter of scale to serve this to you as well,” Fundis replied. #futharkvillage @blithgunde @MightySigurd @SRCExplores
“How can you afford to feed everyone this quality every night? Svartalfheim doesn’t get enough sunlight to produce much food, and vegetables like this don’t grow very fast. You can’t possibly have enough farms to feed a city of this size, can you?” Kenaz asked.#futharkvillage

“The entire city, Kenaz?” Fundis clarified. “No, we can’t. But the royal family? Yes. There is enough to feed us well and to keep the city going.”

“Did the Fimbulwinter affect you as badly down here as it did us in Midgard?”#futharkvillage @rhipossessed @MarieHa44988077
“Almost not at all. Your winter was on the surface. We weren’t able to venture out as much, due to snow and ice, but we had no famine. But three years without a growing season sounds tough. How did you avoid starvation yourselves?”#futharkvillage

Kenaz couldn't help but brag. "We have an excellent farmer, Jera, who was able to provide for us. He was able to grow some food in the autumn-like temperatures, and he had worked with his daughter, Isa, to store quite a bit before the Fimbulwinter came."#futharkvillage

"Isn't that always the way?" Fundis asked rhetorically. "Our children are the reason we work together to make a better world."
— Perseus Greenman (@futharkvillage) November 18, 2019
"Oh," Kenaz interjected. "You have children? How many?"
"I have three myself. Their father died at Ragnarok."#futharkvillage
"I am quite sorry to hear that," Kenaz said. "We lost hundreds when our village was destroyed as well. We were able to save two dozen in three longships, but only we few escaped the flames."#futharkvillage

"Well, our scouts report that you are raising your new village quickly. What?" Fundis stopped at a horrified look from Kenaz. "Oh, don't look at me like that. Of course we've been watching the construction of a settlement so close to our city."#futharkvillage

"You've been busy: You already have a mead hall for communal dinners, and several smaller huts for living quarters. Your well is well-built, if you'll pardon the wordplay. Your stables, though, are a bit overbuilt, with room for twice as many horses."#futharkvillage

Kenaz sat back, disconcerted by the whole conversation. She didn't like Fundis' ease with the idea of her people eating less well. She didn't like the way Fundis talked about her children. And she certainly didn't like the thought of the dwarves spying on them. #futharkvillage

But Kenaz didn't get to stew on this for too long, because that was when King Nordri walked into the hall.
